A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

If you were to die tomorrow, where will you go, heaven or hell, and why? The majority will state heaven, because they're a pretty good person. This answer reveals they are trusting in their good works rather than Jesus' payment on the cross. In fact, if our salvation could be earned, then why would God have allowed His Son to die on the cross? Another important question is: "Why do you identify with a particular religion or denomination?" The overwhelming majority will state they were simply born into that religion. Many feel to change would be an insult to their parents or even the memory of their departed loved ones. Many will declare their religion based on what they don't believe in rather than what they do believe in. Many who are Jewish state that they are so because they don't believe in Jesus as their Savior and they were born Jewish.

Read the amazing words in Isaiah 29:13-14, "Therefore the Lord said, "Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men, Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work Among this people, A marvelous work and a wonder; For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden." Jesus quoted Isaiah 29:13 in Matthew 15:7-8, after pointing out the hypocrisy of the question posed by the Pharisees in Matthew 15:2, "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." Many mistakenly believe that the religious leaders didn't recognize what Jesus was doing at the time, but we read in John 3:1-2 from the lips of Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." From this encounter, Jesus launches into the discussion about being "born again". So what of the others, besides Nicodemus? We read in John 12:42-43, "Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."

Many like to state that Jesus was a good man or a good teacher, but nothing more. Jesus was crucified for the sin of blasphemy (claiming to be God) (Matthew 26:65). C.S Lewis popularized the argument that no one can get away with stating that Jesus was simply a good teacher since He, Himself claimed to be God. Therefore the only three options available is that Jesus was either a lunatic, a liar, or the Lord. For the majority who do not recognize Jesus as Lord, they must ask themselves, "Why not?" If it is because they never saw Him for who He was growing up in some mainstream denomination, then they are allowing their theology to be based on the actions of men, rather than the reality of Jesus as presented in the Bible. If Jewish, and you have heard your whole life that Jesus is not who He claims to be, but never actually have read the Bible, then you are trusting the opinions of men, even the words written by men in the Talmud (commentaries of the Rabbis). As I mentioned earlier, God did not establish religion, he desires relationship. May those who do not know Christ stop listening to the words of men, and pick up God's Word with an open mind and get to know Him for the first time. May those who profess to know Him, stop going through the motions. When we worship may we sing to Him, when we pray may we sincerely talk to Him, etc. Only through revival, and a heartfelt move back into a sincere relationship with Him, will we see lives change.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. ~Colossians 4:5-6

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Seek for happiness and you will never find it. Seek righteousness and you will discover you are happy. It will be there without your knowing it, without your seeking it.
