A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

We read in Philippians 3:12-14, "Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." These comments by Paul come on the heels of his describing his past accomplishments in this life before coming to Christ in 3:4-6. After describing them he states in 3:7-8, "But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ...". The King James Version uses the word, "dung" instead of "rubbish". Paul was not going to reminisce on either past mistakes or past accomplishments. There was work to be done for His kingdom, and this can't be accomplished if he is looking backwards instead of forward. In Christ we must never forget who we are, as explained in 3:20, "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,". We are simply ambassadors for Christ while on this earth, with our real citizenship being in heaven, for those of us who have become God's children.

You might want to say, "But you have no idea what I have done". Do you really think that your past mistakes are more powerful than what Jesus accomplished on the cross? No matter what our past includes, even murder, Jesus paid the price for your sins on the cross 2000 years ago. As a result, grace and mercy are yours if you humble yourself, repent, and embark on a relationship with your Savior. If you are His child, and simply forgot this for a period of time, living aimlessly and foolishly, we never stopped being His son or daughter. As in the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15, though the son wandered, the father's arms were always open wide ready to accept him back. So when you feel this hopelessness, we must remember two verses: Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", and John 15:5, "...without Me you can do nothing". Everything seems impossible in our strength, but nothing is impossible in His strength. Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Just as dangerous to our walk are these negative detours are those moments on our highlight reel in our walk with God. It is great if you had a mighty experience stepping out in faith for God. That was yesterday, what about today? Our purpose as God's ambassadors is to continue to move forward in whatever He has called us to do today. This cannot be done if our eyes are looking backwards.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ~1 Ephesians 6:10-11

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Dearly beloved, remember that you are not of this world; that Satan is not your captain; that your joy and Paradise are not here; that your companions are not the multitude of worldlings. But ye are of another world. Christ is your Captain; your joy is in heaven; your companions are the fathers, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, virgins, confessors, and dear saints of God, who follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.
