A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

Ultimately, we all make a choice as to what we believe in. Your faith rests upon that thing which you will not budge from. Many reject Christianity because of a difficult teaching, or they don't believe in miracles, or it doesn't measure up to their pre-conceived ideas of the world. As Christians, we must not forget that we are called to be witnesses not defense attorneys. It is so easy to get defensive with those who reject the gospel message. An approach that you might consider is simply to ask the other person to explain how their theory goes from the beginning to the conclusion. Atheists, agnostics, scientists who want to start with the Big Bang Theory have a problem since the originator of this theory, later claimed that it makes no sense since four physical forces would have needed to be present for it to take place. These same individuals who like to start with evolution, quoting Charles Darwin have a problem since Darwin stated if a multitude of missing links are not found in the next generation, then his theory is not true. None have been found. His theory was stated before modern genetics, atheist and co-founder of the DNA molecule, Francis Crick, stated at the end of his life that DNA was too complex to have occurred randomly but required an intelligent designer.

If one adheres to a different religion, they too should attempt to go from beginning to end. For Buddhists, their founder simply gave wise sayings, never claiming deity upon himself, nor offering any explanation from beginning to end. For Muslims, though they proclaim an end time scenario, they have a book with no fulfilled prophecy, and much of their book written between 500 to 2000 years after the Bible, simply gets the information wrong from the original source. For the orthodox Jewish individual, their book is our book for the first 39 books. But the timing of their Messiah has come and gone, and many of those prophecies which would of had to be fulfilled are no longer possible (even one of their most revered Rabbis, Maimonides, acknowledged this fact around 1000 years after Jesus). Their story is incomplete without their Messiah, which is really our Messiah, Jesus. Many of them will turn to Jesus during the Tribulation or the time of Jacob's trouble (Jeremiah 30:7).

Jesus made some difficult statements in John 6:51, with the results in verse 52, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?"" Jesus went on to explain that they were not going to literally drink His blood or eat His flesh, but He was going to give up His life for us and believers or those who abide in Him would be healed of sin and the second death through His sacrifice. We see the result in 6:66, "From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Jesus then asks an important question in 6:67-69, "Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?" But Simon Peter answers Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the son of the living God.’"

Peter and the other disciples faced the same question we must all face. Our prayers may not seem like they get answered, those who view things through the eyes of the false prosperity gospel preachers may never prosper. We may stumble over various passages of Scripture. But whenever anyone feels the temptation to reject or turn away from the gospel message, the question everyone must ask is what you are going to replace Him with. What other source gives a complete story and explanation from life's origins to the conclusion of things as we know it? It is this truth which should keep all of us from wandering. In Jesus' day too many focused on the horizontal, while Jesus was teaching them about the vertical. This is the same problem today. We must fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of life, and adopt the same attitude as Paul when he said in Philippians 1:21, "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior means we can't lose, no matter what happens.

THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. ~John 5:24

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Aspire to be something more than the mass of church members. Lift up your cry to God and beseech him to fire you with a nobler ambition than that which possesses the common Christian — that you may be found faithful unto God at the last, and may win many crowns for your Lord and Master, Christ.

— C. H. Spurgeon (1834 – 1892)
